Why Tallow for Skin? And Why We’re Fussy About Ours.

Oct 03, 2026 Salt Coast

Beef tallow. On your face.

We understand the follow-up questions.

Will it smell? Will it feel greasy? And why would you choose it over the moisturiser already sitting in your bathroom?

All reasonable. We’ve spent years working on the answers.

Why use tallow for skin?

Tallow is rendered beef fat. In skincare, it provides a rich moisturising base that helps soften skin and hold moisture in.

The everyday appeal? Making dry cheeks, rough hands and neglected elbows feel more comfortable and lovely to touch. As well as providing everyday moisture for the entire face and body.

You don’t need to develop an interest in homesteading to appreciate that.

But the ingredient is only the beginning. How it’s prepared and formulated determines what the finished jar is actually like to use.

And that’s where we get fussy.

Good tallow balm should be good skincare.

You might love the idea of tallow and still dislike the jar you bought.

Too hard to spread. Too greasy for your liking. A scent you keep trying to convince yourself is fine.

We don’t think enthusiasm for an ingredient should require lowering your standards.

At Salt Coast, we focus on the things you notice every time you open the lid: the scent, the texture, the spread and how much you enjoy reaching for it again.

Does tallow skincare smell like beef?

It can. Ours doesn’t.

We carefully purify our tallow before it becomes your moisturiser. We don’t rely on a heavy fragrance to cover an unwanted smell.

Bare is fragrance-free, made with purified grass-fed tallow and organic jojoba oil.

Sable Vanilla starts with the same base and adds real Madagascan vanilla beans for a soft, warm vanilla scent.

One keeps quiet. One brings a little vanilla.

Neither needs you to make peace with smelling like dinner.

Why do we add jojoba oil?

Because the experience matters.

Our carefully developed ratio of organic jojoba oil gives the tallow balm a silky glide and makes it easier to spread.

The texture is dense and custard-like. Lightly whipped, packed generously, and made to be used.

You’re paying for what goes on your skin. We keep that in mind when filling the jar.

How do you use tallow balm?

Start with a small dab, warm it between clean fingertips and smooth it over the area you want to moisturise. Add more if needed.

For your face, begin with a thin layer. For hands, elbows and heels, adjust the amount to the area.

If the finish feels too rich, try less next time. A little goes a long way. A balm is different from a lotion, and a generous scoop isn’t always doing you a favour.

Keep the products you already enjoy. Your tallow moisturiser can earn a place alongside them, and it doesn’t replace sunscreen.

Is tallow right for every skin type?

No single moisturiser suits everyone.

Check the ingredients and patch test before using a new balm, particularly if your skin is reactive. If you notice irritation or new breakouts, stop using it.

Your skin gets a vote. We’re not going to argue with it.

Why Salt Coast?

We’ve been selling tallow skincare for seven years, and the ingredient alone has never been the whole story.

We want the jar you reach for because it spreads beautifully, smells right and leaves your skin feeling good.

Tallow got our attention. Making it a moisturiser you actually want to use kept it.
