Putting beef fat on your face sounds objectively questionable.
We know.
Then you use good tallow and suddenly you’re standing in the bathroom wondering why the weird beef-fat thing has made it into the permanent rotation.
If you’ve landed here searching beef tallow for your face, chances are you have questions.
Will it clog my pores?
Will I look greasy?
Can I use it with the skincare I already own?
And perhaps most importantly: am I about to become one of those tallow people?
No.
Keep your serums.
We’re just here to talk moisturiser.
So, can you actually use tallow on your face?
Yes.
Tallow makes a beautifully rich base for a face moisturiser because it works as an emollient - helping soften the skin and giving dry skin some much-needed backup when it comes to holding onto moisture.
But here’s the part the internet sometimes skips:
“Contains tallow” doesn’t automatically mean “good skincare.”
The tallow matters.
The way it’s purified matters.
What it’s blended with matters.
Texture matters.
And if you’re expected to walk around smelling vaguely like a roast dinner afterwards, we’d argue something has gone wrong.
We have standards.
Beef tallow for dry skin makes a lot of sense
You know that feeling when you moisturise your face and twenty minutes later your skin is somehow dry again?
Rude.
That’s where richer balm-style moisturisers come into their own.
A tallow face moisturiser contains far less water than the creams and lotions most of us are used to, so a little goes a very long way.
And we mean little.
If you’re approaching your jar with the same scoop you use for a body lotion, abort mission.
Warm a small amount between your fingers.
Smooth it over your skin.
Add more if you need it.
If your face looks freshly glazed, we’ve gone too far.
Is tallow greasy on your face?
It certainly can be.
And this is exactly the kind of thing that made us fussy about tallow in the first place.
We didn’t want hard.
We didn’t want waxy.
We didn’t want gritty.
And we definitely didn’t want a layer of grease sitting on the skin while your hair slowly attached itself to your cheeks.
We wanted rich.
There’s a difference.
Our Face + Body balm combines purified grass-fed tallow with organic jojoba because the jojoba gives the formula the glide we wanted.
The finished texture is dense, silky and ridiculously spreadable.
Around here we call it custard energy.
Because apparently seven years into making tallow, that’s the technical terminology we’ve settled on.
Will beef tallow clog your pores?
Here comes the deeply unexciting answer:
Your skin decides.
There is no ingredient on earth that every single face is going to love.
If your skin tends to be dry, easily stripped or loves richer moisturisers, tallow may feel glorious.
If your skin is very oily, breakout-prone or historically hates anything heavy, go slowly.
Patch test it.
Use a tiny amount.
See what happens.
We’re a tallow company and we’re still not going to tell you that everyone on earth needs tallow on their face.
That would be weird.
Do I have to ditch my normal skincare?
Absolutely not.
Actually, please don’t.
If you spent good money on a serum you love, use the serum.
Vitamin C? Fine.
Retinoid? Fine.
Fancy little bottle with a pipette that makes you feel like a cosmetic chemist?
Also fine.
And SPF is still SPF.
Using tallow on your face doesn’t require joining a skincare religion.
For us, it simply takes the place of a moisturiser.
Lighter products first.
Then a small amount of balm.
Done.
We like modern skincare.
We also really like tallow.
Turns out the two can coexist without anybody throwing their bathroom cabinet into the sea.
Morning or night?
Either.
Both.
Whenever your skin wants it.
At night you might prefer a slightly richer layer.
In the morning, particularly underneath makeup and sunscreen, use less and give it a minute to settle.
There is no elaborate tallow protocol here.
This is skincare designed for people who have other things to do.
Can you wear tallow under makeup?
Usually, we wouldn’t.
Tallow is rich, and that’s exactly why people love it but it also means it’s not really designed to behave like a lightweight day cream or makeup primer.
If your skin is very dry, you may get away with the tiniest amount pressed into dry areas and given plenty of time to settle before makeup.
And when we say tiny, we mean tiny.
For most people, we’d keep tallow for nighttime, makeup-free days or whenever your skin wants something richer.
No point forcing a beautiful balm into a job it wasn’t made for.
Bare or Sable Vanilla for your face?
Same Salt Coast base. Different mood.
Bare is our fragrance-free girl.
Purified grass-fed tallow + organic jojoba.
That’s it.
If you have sensitive skin, don’t like scented facial skincare or just want the simplest possible option, start there.
Sable Vanilla uses real Madagascan vanilla bean.
And no, we haven’t dumped synthetic vanilla fragrance into it until you smell like icing.
It’s soft.
Warm.
Subtle.
Still very much skincare.
Both are made for face and body because we never saw the point in creating six jars when one excellent one could live on the bathroom bench and be reached for constantly.
What should a good tallow face moisturiser actually feel like?
This may be the more useful question.
Because the internet spends an enormous amount of time discussing whether tallow is good while paying considerably less attention to whether the actual jar of tallow is any good.
We think it should:
melt easily into your skin,
spread without dragging,
feel rich without leaving you swimming in grease,
be smooth not gritty,
and smell like skincare rather than cattle.
Not exactly controversial requirements.
Yet here we are.
Isn’t beef tallow skincare just a trend?
Tallow is having a moment.
We’re not going to pretend otherwise.
But people were putting animal fats on skin considerably before TikTok arrived.
And we’ve been making tallow skincare for more than seven years including back when explaining what we sold required significantly longer conversations.
What’s changed is that people are finally paying attention.
Good.
We just want the category to grow up a little while it’s here.
Less look, beef fat in a jar.
More make the damn skincare good.
So, is beef tallow good for your face?
It can be.
Especially if your skin likes rich moisturisers and you’re looking for something simple that actually feels substantial on the skin.
But the reason we love tallow isn’t because it’s trendy.
And it isn’t because it’s old-fashioned.
It’s because when it’s done properly, it’s bloody good skincare.
That’s the whole Salt Coast thesis really.
Take the thing people already love about tallow.
Fix the things they tolerate because they think they have to.
The smell.
The grit.
The drag.
The greasy finish.
The enormous airy whip.
Then make something that wouldn’t feel out of place next to the rest of your skincare.
Beef fat and all.
Tallow done well.
Quick questions, because Google brought you here for a reason
Can you use beef tallow on your face every day?
If your skin likes it, yes. Morning, night or both. You don’t need much.
Is beef tallow good for dry skin on the face?
Rich balm moisturisers can be particularly useful for skin that feels dry or tight, which is one reason tallow has become so popular with dry-skin people.
Can you use tallow with serums?
Yep. Serum first, tallow afterwards. Nobody is confiscating your skincare routine.
Can you put makeup over tallow?
Yes. Use a small amount, let it settle, then go in with your makeup.
Does beef tallow clog pores?
It may for some people and be completely fine for others. Skin is individual. Start small and see how yours responds.
